What is Rotary?

Rotary is an organization of business and professional leaders united worldwide, who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world. The Rotary Club of Haywood County is part of Rotary International, the association of more than 30,000 clubs in 166 countries. The name Rotary comes from the first club's practice of meeting in rotation at each member's place of business.

The emblem of Rotary is a wheel with a hub, spokes and surrounding cogs. The hub represents the club, the spokes represent the influences that radiate from the club, and the cogs represent the individual members. The 1.2 million men and women members of Rotary clubs around the world today share the ideal of service, exemplified by the motto, "Service Above Self."

Rotary is the world's oldest service club with a proud history dating from a Chicago beginning in 1905. Paul Harris was the founder and organizer and Silvester Schiele, one of the other founding members, served as the first president of that club.
